Education

Education is an experience or act, which has influential effects on the mind, physical ability or character of a person. It is technically the process by which societies deliberately convey acquired knowledge, values and skills from a generation to another. Education is believed to have started millions of years ago since the evolution of various cultures counted on the practise of transferring knowledge.

Teachers particularly instruct students’ education through subjects such as writing, reading, science, mathematics and history. This process is occasionally called schooling when pertaining to the education of teaching a particular subject, commonly as professors at higher learning institutions. There are also fields for vocational learning as well as informal education, which can be obtained through personal experiences, Internet and libraries and museums.

Since 1952, education has been a basic human right as stated in the Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights. The United Nations’ International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1966) assures such right under Article 13. Different systems of formal education include primary, secondary, higher, adult and alternative education.

Primary or elementary education comprises of the first 5 to 7 years of structured and formal education. Starting age (usually at five or six) may vary across the globe. Elementary education is compulsory in most countries. Primary schools where primary education is taught are commonly subdivided into junior and infant schools.

Secondary education consists of formal education’s second years, which happens during adolescence. Mainly, this is the period of transition from the comprehensive and compulsory primary education to selective and optional tertiary education. Schools for this kind of system may be high schools, lyceums, gymnasiums, colleges, middle schools or vocational schools. Generally, secondary education lasts from seven to ten years of schooling.

Higher or tertiary education is non-compulsory level of education that pursues the completion of a school after primary and secondary education. This is generally taken to obtain undergraduate, postgraduate or vocational education. The primary institutions for tertiary education are universities and colleges. Academic degrees, diplomas and certificates are earned after graduation.

Recently, adult education has flourished in several countries. It has various forms from formal class-based learning to e-learning and self-directed learning. Among the courses that adult education offers are medical coding and billing, veterinary, bookkeeping and real estate licence.

There is also a non-traditional education, which is referred to as alternative education. This is an extensive term used to denote all other forms of education that do not count in traditional education (for all levels of education and age groups). This is designed for instructing people who has special needs (such as intellectual disability or teenage pregnancy).

Educational learning is a process. Institutions generally follow curriculum and instruct academic disciplines such as mathematics, natural sciences, humanities, social science and applied sciences. They also used learning modalities to teach, which are fashionably divided into visual (observation), kinaesthetic (hands-on) and auditory (listening). Depending on the usage of these modes, teaching may be effective or not.

Finally, teaching will not be successful unless teachers are able to convey the essence of a subject to their students. Good teachers are those who translate information, experience, good judgment and wisdom into significant knowledge that students will understand, preserve and teach to others. In this way, the motive of education, which is basically learning, is achieved. Branded usb drives are great educational tools, to show off school mascots, or just for kids to have a handy device to store important documents.
